Fall Sports Deadline Approaching Fast! | Granville Recreation District

Reminder the deadline to register for Fall Sports is August 10th!
NEW Flag Football 1 & 2 Grades
Participants will learn the fundamentals of football, passing, catching and basic plays. This program will be a great way for all the participants to have fun, be part of a team and learn basic football skills. This program will meet once per week an hour as a combination practice and game.
Flag Football 3 & 4 Graders
Flag football teams will compete against other Granville teams. This program begins with a player clinic and evaluation to evaluate each player?s skill level to aid in the formation of evenly matched teams. Teams will practice two nights a week, games will be played on Saturday and/or Sundays.
NEW Cheerleading 1st & 2nd Grades
Cheerleading teaches young athletes all the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the team. Each participant will learn cheers in a fun and encouraging atmosphere which include hand and body movements and jumping techniques. This program will meet once per week for an hour as a combination practice and cheering for the 1st and 2nd grade flag football games.
Fall Soccer
The GRD soccer program is for boys and girls 4 years old (by September 30, 2012) through the 6th grade. The divisions are as follows: Pre-School; Kindergarten; 1st grade; 2nd grade; 3rd and 4th grade; and 5th and 6th grade. The 2nd grade and younger divisions practice and play all games at Wildwood Park. The 3rd and 4th grade and the 5th and 6th grade divisions practice in Granville and play games in Granville and local communities. Pre-School will meet one day per week. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will have 1 practice and 1 game per week. 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders will have 2 practices and 1 game per week.

Tough questions after Beijing rain storm kills 37
BEIJING (AP) ? As China's flood-ravaged capital dealt with the aftermath of the heaviest rain in six decades Monday, including the deaths of 37 people, questions were being raised about whether the city's push for modernization came at the expense of basic infrastructure such as drainage networks.
Rescuers were still searching buildings that collapsed during Saturday night's torrential downpour and some roads that were covered in waist-deep water remained closed. The city government said as of Sunday night, 25 people had drowned, six were killed when houses collapsed, one was hit by lightning and five were electrocuted by fallen power lines.
Beijing residents shared photos online of submerged cars stranded on flooded streets, city buses with water up to commuters' knees and cascades of water rushing down the steps of overpasses.
The official China Daily newspaper reported that 60,000 people had been evacuated from their homes and damages from the storm had reached at least 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion).
Although the worst-hit areas were in rural hilly outskirts of the city, the scale of the disaster was a major embarrassment for Beijing, the showcase capital of China where things like this are not supposed to happen.
The city has seen tens of billions of dollars poured into its modernization, adding iconic venues for the 2008 Olympics, the world's second-largest airport, new subway lines and dazzling skyscrapers ? all while basics like water drainage were apparently neglected.
Many were left wondering how badly prepared other less-prosperous parts of China must be.
"If so much chaos can be triggered in Beijing, the capital of the nation, problems in urban infrastructure of many other places can only be worse," said a commentary in Monday's state-run Global Times newspaper. "In terms of drainage technology, China is decades behind developed societies."
There was similar criticism on the popular microblog service, Sina Weibo.
"This is China's capital of Beijing. Look what happens when it's hit by a rainstorm," wrote Weibo user Wen Hui. "The drainage systems of Rome that were built 2,500 years ago are still in use and you can drive a car through them. Can a dog get through Beijing's drainage tunnels?"
The criticism mirrors some of that seen after a high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in southeastern China a year ago Monday. That turned into a public-relations nightmare for the government and led many to question the quality of infrastructure in the country and the government's transparency on disasters.
Some pointed out that Saturday's deluge was historic in nature, with the Global Times noting it was the heaviest rainstorm in the capital in 61 years.
"In just in one day, it rained as much as it normally rains in six months in Beijing," said Zhang Junfeng, a senior engineer from the Ministry of Transport who runs weekend tours of Beijing reservoirs and gives lectures on water conservancy. "No drainage system can withstand rains this big."
The capital's skies were clear Monday, with traffic largely back to normal and the city's main airport operating normally after hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the weekend. But hard hit areas were still feeling the effects.
In Qinglonghu, a village about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from downtown Beijing where many migrant workers from surrounding provinces have settled, at least two dozen single-story brick homes were flooded. Local residents said Monday they were terrified to go back into their homes for fear they would collapse. They said they had no drinking water or food and had yet to get any assistance from local officials.
At least three people from the village were believed killed, locals said, including a man crushed by a falling power line and a woman and her baby daughter who were washed away.
"We couldn't save them," said 50-year-old Wang Lianfeng, a villager who had taken shelter on a roof when she saw the woman and her 8-month-old girl swept away. Wang sobbed as she described being unable to reach them. She said the body of the girl was found but the mother is still missing.
Other areas around Qinglonghu appeared minimally affected. Piles of dirt from a large construction site appeared to have formed a dam that kept the downpour from draining into a nearby river.
The village is in Fangshan district, the worst hit area of the city, which received 460 millimeters (18.4 inches) of rain on Saturday.
Heavy rain also proved deadly elsewhere in the country. Six people were killed by landslides in Sichuan province in the west, Xinhua said, citing disaster officials. Four people died in Shanxi province in the north when their truck was swept away by a rain-swollen river. At least eight people died and 17 were missing after heavy rains hit in neighboring Shaanxi province.
China suffers flooding and dozens of storm-related deaths every summer during its rainy season, but such a heavy downpour in relatively dry Beijing is unusual.

APThe decision of prosecutors in Albany, New York to drop felony charges against Eagles running back Dion Lewis underscores the difference between an arrest and a conviction.
That nuance apparently was lost on the Lions, who from a P.R. standpoint had no real option other than to cut cornerback Aaron Berry after his Friday night arrest for allegedly pointing a gun at three men in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.? But what if prosecutors decide not to rely on three men who may or may not have been drinking and/or who may or may not have embellished the claims?? At this point, it could very well be their word against Berry?s.
Then again, as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press said during Monday?s PFT Live, Berry met with the team before the team released him.? It?s possible that Berry admitted to pointing the gun or otherwise said something to suggest he doesn?t get it, making it easier for the Lions to feel good about the only right decision, given the rash of arrests.
Monday?s chat with Birkett touched on other circumstances regarding the arrest, including the fact that Berry allegedly pointed the gun within 24 hours or so after:? (1) he agreed to enter a diversion program aimed at resolving his DUI arrest from last month; and (2) a madman shot up a theater in Colorado.
Yes, the Lions had no choice.? But it will be a shame if, in the end, it turns out that Berry didn?t do what he is accused of doing.
In the interim, it?ll be interesting to see whether any other team submits a waivers claim for Berry, essentially squatting on him while conducting their own investigation as to whether he is guilty as charged.? It wouldn?t be a popular move, but teams without a recent history of players behaving badly could get away with taking a chance on a guy who may have finally gotten the wake-up call he so desperately needs.

Making a Plan For After High School
As we enter into high school, it is likely that we are beginning to think about what we are going to do once we graduate. Some of us are going to enter directly into the workforce while others may be thinking about attending college and then entering into the workforce. If you plan on getting some form of higher education, there are some things that you should keep in mind which will assist you in making a wise decision. Keep in mind, the decision you make now is going to be something that follows you for the rest of your life.
Perhaps the most important thing for you to decide is not only what you are going to do when you graduate high school, but where you?re going to do it. Some people are going to want to take some classes in their local area, perhaps attending a junior college without traveling a long distance. There may come a time, however, when you want to expand your education and you will need to do some traveling in order to do so. For example, if you are going to be an electrical engineer, you may need to pursue an electrical engineering degree outside of your local area. There are many colleges which offer these types of degrees but not all of them will offer exactly what you need.
You should also consider the possibility that you will need to attend a specific school that is geared towards your career goals. Interior design schools are a good example of this type of college. It can help you to get the education that you need without the distractions that may be associated with other, larger universities. Of course, many of those types of schools have a name behind them that is going to look great on your resume. Make sure that you consider this before signing on the dotted line as well.
Have you given any consideration to taking online courses? This is something that can help you, even if you have already entered into the workforce. Online education is becoming more and more popular, both because it is convenient and because you can study from any area. If you were thinking about taking some classes, you might want to consider doing so online so that you can stay home instead of traveling a long distance.
One other important thing for you to keep in mind is that you choose your education according to the credentials of the college. Those credentials should be based solely on the educational process that is offered by the university. Although it may be tempting to go to a particular university because of the football team or because they may offer certain extracurricular activities, that can be a poorly based decision. When all is said and done, your education is going to make a difference in your ability to get a job that will support you as well as your family. Make sure that you choose a college that is going to give you the best opportunity to live the rest of your life as you would like.

If you love taking things apart and figuring out how they work then a electrical engineering degree might suit you well. Think about what you like to do, and try to turn that into a career.
