(AP) ? A car came crashing into a Kansas City day care center Tuesday when a sport utility vehicle rear-ended a parked Cadillac, injuring the SUV's driver and three children, police said.

The Cadillac was parked and had no driver when the Range Rover rear-ended it, pushing it into the day care and trapping two children under the Cadillac. The three children were being treated for mild to moderate injuries, said Children's Mercy spokeswoman Jessica Salazar. The SUV's driver, meanwhile, was in stable condition at a hospital, Kansas City police Capt. Tye Grant said.

The injured children were among about 40 inside the Christian Academy Child Care east of downtown around 1 p.m. when the accident happened. Police said the SUV's driver was "approximately 80" years old. A utility pole also was struck, Grant said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. As neighbors milled around watching, crews pulled the smashed SUV from the building several hours after the crash, making visible a pile of rubble inside the day care center. Several child-sized chairs were strewn on the sidewalk outside.

"We are holding all comments until we get some clear facts," said day care director Dena Washington as she waited behind a nearby house for parents ? several of them crying ? to pick up their children.

Curtis Sawyer, whose 1- and 2-year-old children attend the day care, said he rushed to the area after receiving a phone call about the accident.

"It was shocking to me," said Sawyer, 33, as he held the older child in his arms. "I'm just glad my kids are safe, and I'm sorry for the kids that got hurt. My heart and prayers go out to their families."

Sharon Washington said she was feeling "very relieved" as she walked up to the center to visit with staff. Three of her grandchildren ? ages 5, 8 and 1 ? attend the center but were staying with her when the accident happened.

"We were lucky we weren't in the day care," said her 8-year-old grandchild, Timmisha Washington. "They ran over me and my brother's classroom. We lucky. We lucky."

Hi

Ditto; I'm not sure whether I should sit back and laugh, or if I should be generally concerned for my well-being. (Or future well-being that is.) But all I can do is sit back and pray that nothing breaks... or explodes. Yes explosions are cool, but with caution taken. Or used excessively in movies or books, yes that's good.

Gah that's a sin, I hate it when you have to leave a roleplay like that. I had to leave a roleplay site a couple of days ago, because one of the moderators was harassing me and they refused to do anything about it. But I'm still checking in on the roleplay I was in on that site, it was quite enjoyable!

Hm, I can't say that I can beat an Elf at Hogwarts (though I think that's flippin' amazing.) I like themes that are modern but with a twist - like someone from our world gets hauled into another world, or the other way around. Or something like some mortals are tasked by some god who's gifted them with supernatural powers. I also like demons and angels, they're always fun.

Investigative report: Life and death in assisted living

More and more elderly Americans are electing to spend their later years in assisted living facilities, intended for people who cannot live on their own, but who do not need the standard of 24/7 medical care nursing homes provide.

That said, there's really no specific definition of what "assisted living" means, though there's no question this type of care has become a multi-billion-dollar a year business in the U.S. Because there are 50 states, and licensing and regulation of assisted care facilities happen at the state level, oversight and enforcement are inconsistent, often loose. Couple that with a quest for profits and you've got a situation causing nationwide concern as to whether some practices in the industry might be putting senior citizens at risk.

PBS' Frontline, in collaboration with ProPublica, an independent, non-profit news organization that produces public-interest journalism, will on Tuesday night broadcast the results of a major investigation into the operations of Emeritus Senior Living, the largest assisted living company in the U.S.

Together with FRONTLINE, Yahoo! News previews this investigative report here, with an exclusive video excerpt from Tuesday night's show.

You can see FRONTLINE's online report here.

You can see ProPublica's online report here.

In the video above, FRONTLINE and ProPublica discuss the issue of one senior who took a fall at one of Emeritus' facilities and was found face down on the floor. Suffering from dementia, she was taken to the hospital alonge because the facility didn't have enough staff to go with her to the hospital and talk to doctors on her behalf. When she returned, she was put in a bed and her condition began to deteriorate, until she developed pressure ulcers and extensive skin damage. She stayed at Emeritus' Emerald Hills facility for weeks, even though the laws of the state prohibit seniors with such serious wounds to remain in assisted living.

A staff member tried to tend to her wounds, and was told by her boss, "just don't let anybody know." In the course of further investigating this situation, the show's producers discovered Emeritus had what was called a "Keep the Back Door Shut" policy -- meaning: Don't let anybody out unless they're dead.

However, Emeritus' CEO, Granger Cobb, testified under oath that the policy has a different meaning: ...It refers to trying to do everything we can . . . families usually want their loved ones to stay with us as long as possible, as opposed to skilled nursing and varying institutional environments. So we try to work with the families and do all we can to -- to, you know, accommodate that."

Check local listings here using your zip code to see what time "Life and Death in Assisted Living" airs in your area on July 30.

Blair Underwood back on TV starring in 'Ironside'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Blair Underwood is returning to series television in a remake of "Ironside," which shares few similarities with the original series that starred Raymond Burr.

The character's name and job as a detective is the same, and he uses a wheelchair after being paralyzed from the waist down.

In a nod to Burr, Underwood's character ends the day by sipping a glass of bourbon.

"Everything else is re-imagined. All new characters, a new city, new texture, new storytelling, new audience," Underwood told the Television Critics Association on Saturday. "It's a crime drama wrapped in a character study."

The original series, set in San Francisco, ran on NBC from 1967-75. The reboot is based in New York City and filmed in Los Angeles. NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the show that debuts Oct. 2.

Underwood said he got used to the wheelchair by using one at home while learning his lines. The role is especially meaningful to him because his mother, Marilyn, is in a wheelchair as the result of multiple sclerosis.

In preparing for the part, Underwood is working with technical adviser David Bryant, who became a paraplegic after a skiing accident at 19. Bryant's self-sufficiency inspires the new "Ironside" incarnation, with the handles on the character's wheelchair removed just as they are on Bryant's chair.

"It's something I had to delve into and continue to delve into as often as possible," Underwood said. "Our job is to make you believe it and be authentic in that."

Ironside's personal life is noticeably spicier than it was on the old show, too.

"What David told me is every injury is unique, and everybody is different depending on where it affects your spinal cord," Underwood said. "So, yes, in Ironside's case, he is able."

Underwood returns to TV after a stint on Broadway last year. The 48-year-old actor has a long history on NBC, including a breakout role in "L.A. Law."

His co-stars include Spencer Grammer, the oldest daughter of Kelsey Grammer, a star on the NBC hits "Cheers" and "Frasier."

Chinese Professor Thinks ?To Rape A Bargirl Does Less Harm Than To Rape A Good Woman?

  • News

The ongoing trial of Li Tianyi, a 17-year-old boy accused of participating in the gang rape of a woman in Beijing, spurred some vomit-inducing comments from Yi Yanyou, a professor at Tsinghua University. As the blog Shanghaiist reported, in defending the accused rapist, Yanyou posted to his Weibo account that since ?a bargirl, a dancing girl, an escort or a prostitute? is more likely to consent to sex, it isn?t as bad to rape them.

In an attempt to clarify his comment, Yanyou continued (but probably should have kept his mouth shut):

?To emphasise that the victim is a bargirl doesn?t mean it?s OK to rape a bargirl. It only means that a bargirl is more likely to agree to a sexual act. Besides, even if it is a rape, to rape a bargirl does less harm than to rape a good woman.?

Oh, so many reasons why this is horrible! First, it implies that the bodies of some women are more valuable than others. Second, it also implies that men are going to rape women no matter what, so it?s better if they rape the ?bad? women. No, that is so wrong, Professor Yi. At the very least, Professor Yi has received a healthy dose of heat from the internet for his ignorance.

A little perspective on our place in the universe

Here are some things that will give whatever might be on your mind at the moment a little perspective.

You?ve probably seen these images plastered all over the Internet already. But seeing as I blogged about the new pale blue dot before it was taken, here they are:

That?s Saturn, the Earth and moon as they were last Friday evening. I quite like this raw version too:

On the topic of space images, there was a great blog post this week about the term ?false colour? and why we all really need to stop saying it. Dr Robert Hurt explains why he doesn?t like the connotations of deliberate misrepresentation that come with the term, and how ?false? colour images are actually pretty useful in helping us appreciate, for example, the haze of Neptune that we wouldn?t see with our own eyes.

I especially like his point that it?s rather arrogant to call what we see ?true? colour, and visual representations of the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum ?false?:

The idea that out of the entire vast spectrum of light, from gamma rays through radio, only the tiny sliver of light seen by our eyes, sliced into the three filters shared by most humans represent the true colors in the universe is? almost unspeakably arrogant.

There is wonderment to be found in the colors accessible to human eyesight, a fantastic three-dimensional color space of hue and value. I just think it is good to remember a little humility and acknowledge that the particulars of our vision are shaped by a number of accidents of evolution and are no more a ?true? representation of the universe than myriad other possibilities.

(Go read it in full.)

So remember ? we?re on a tiny dot of a planet, and our eyes only allow us to see a tiny slice of the universe. Happy Saturday?

Defense to give closing in Manning-WikiLeaks case

(AP) ? The defense gets the chance Friday to sum up its case in the court-martial of Bradley Manning, the Army private who sent hundreds of thousands of U.S. government documents to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks.

Manning's civilian defense attorney David Coombs was scheduled to give his closing argument in the eighth week of the trial at the Fort Meade Army base outside Baltimore. The case will then go to the judge for deliberations, who has said she could rule anytime in the next several days.

"Tomorrow, you're going to hear what truth sounds like," Coombs told supporters Thursday night after a lengthy and bruising final argument by the prosecution.

Speaking for more than five hours Thursday, with several breaks through the day for people to use the bathrooms and eat lunch, Maj. Ashden Fein told the court Manning was a traitor with one mission as an intelligence analyst deployed in Iraq in 2009 and 2010: to find and reveal government secrets to a group of anarchists, then bask in the glory as a whistleblower.

"The government has its job, but there is nobody who could believe what they said ? much less them," Coombs told a group of some 40 supporters after Thursday's session.

"If it takes six, seven hours to go on a diatribe and try to piece together some convoluted story ... if it takes you that long to get your point across, you know it isn't true," Coombs told supporters in the courtyard of the court building as they were leaving for the day.

He said his closing arguments would likely last about two hours Friday and that he is "going to speak from the heart ? it won't be hard for me to rebut."

Coombs has said the soldier was troubled by what he saw in the war ? and at the same time was struggling as a gay man in the era of "don't ask don't tell". Those struggles made him want to do something to make a difference and he hoped revealing what was going on in the war zone and U.S. diplomacy would inspire debate and reform in American foreign and military policy, Coombs has said.

Fein said Manning betrayed his country's trust and spilled classified information, knowing the material would be seen by the terrorist group al-Qaida.

"WikiLeaks was merely the platform which Pfc. Manning used to ensure all the information was available for the world, including enemies of the United States," Fein said.

Manning, 25, is charged with 21 offenses, but the most serious is aiding the enemy, which carries a possible sentence of up to life in prison. A native of Crescent, Okla., Manning has acknowledged giving WikiLeaks some 700,000 battlefield reports, diplomatic cables and videos. But he says he didn't believe the information would harm troops in Afghanistan and Iraq or threaten national security.

A military judge, not a jury, is hearing the case at Manning's request. Army Col. Denise Lind will deliberate after closing arguments.

The verdict and any sentence will be reviewed, and could be reduced, by the commander of the Military District of Washington, currently Maj. Gen. Jeffery S. Buchanan.

Calif. wildfire destroys 3 homes, 3 mobile homes

IDYLLWILD, Calif. (AP) ? A fast-growing wildfire in the mountains west of Palm Springs destroyed three houses and three mobile homes, and was threatening dozens more residences, officials said Tuesday.

The blaze also destroyed more than a dozen small buildings, a cabin, a garage and about a half-dozen vehicles, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement. One house was damaged but not destroyed.

The wildfire started Monday between Palm Springs and Hemet, near the rural Riverside County community of Mountain Center, and a day later had surged to about 14 square miles.

More than 2,200 firefighters and 25 aircraft had the blaze 10 percent contained.

It was mostly moving east toward the desert and away from small communities of homes, summer cabins and ranches in the San Jacinto mountains, but a change in the wind could easily sweep it back toward homes, authorities said.

"It's a rapidly changing animal," said Forest Service spokesman Lee Beyer.

About 50 homes were evacuated along with Camp Ronald McDonald, which hosts programs for children with cancer and their families.

The fire also led authorities to close a pair of state highways and the Pacific Crest Trail.

A public pool about 20 miles away in Indio was closed because of ash falling on the water.

The fire raged in thick brush and trees at an elevation of 5,000 to 7,500 feet, sending flames 100 feet high. Some of the area had not burned in 35 years and the vegetation was dried out, Beyer said.

"We only had 40 to 50 percent of normal precipitation" over the winter and no rain at all since early April, he said.

Meanwhile, an 11-square-mile wildfire in San Diego County was contained Monday after destroying more than 100 mountain cabins. Authorities say human activity sparked the fire near Julian on July 6.

Quebec police: 5 dead in oil train derailment

As firefighters doused still burning oil tanker cars, more bodies were recovered Sunday in this devastated town in eastern Quebec, raising the death toll to five after a runaway train derailed, igniting explosions and fires that destroyed the downtown district. With dozens of people reported missing, authorities feared they could find more bodies once they reached the hardest-hit areas.

Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said Sunday that about 40 people have been reported missing, but cautioned that the number could fluctuate up or down.

"We met many people who had reported family members missing. Right now I can tell you about 40," Brunet said.

Brunet confirmed two more deaths early Sunday afternoon after confirming two people were found dead overnight. One death was confirmed Saturday.

All but one of the 73 cars were filled with oil, which was being transported from North Dakota's Bakken oil region to a refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The eruptions early Saturday morning sent residents of Lac-Megantic scrambling through the streets under the intense heat of towering fireballs and a red glow that illuminated the night sky.

Local Fire Chief Denis Lauzon likened the charred scene to "a war zone."

"This is really terrible. Our community is grieving and it is taking its toll on us," Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper toured the town on Sunday to offer his condolences.

The search for victims in the charred debris was hampered because two tanker cars were still burning Sunday morning, sparking fears of more potentially fatal blasts.

Lauzon said firefighters are staying 500 feet (150 meters) from the burning tankers, which are being doused with water and foam to keep them from overheating.

"It's a mess," he said.

The multiple blasts came over a span of several hours in the town of 6,000, which is about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east of Montreal and about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of the Maine border.

About 30 buildings were destroyed after tanker rail cars laden with oil caught fire and exploded in the picturesque lakeside town in Quebec's Eastern Townships.

The derailment caused at least five tanker cars to explode in the downtown district, a popular area packed with bars that often bustles on summer weekend nights. Police said the first explosion tore through the town shortly after 1 a.m. local time. The fire then spread to several homes.

Brunet said he couldn't say where the bodies were found exactly because the families have not been notified.

The cause of the accident was believed to be a runaway train, the railway's operator said.

Edward Burkhardt, the president and CEO of Rail World Inc., the parent company of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, said the train had been parked uphill of Lac-Megantic because the engineer had finished his run. The tanker cars somehow came loose and sped downhill nearly seven miles into the town before derailing.

"We've had a very good safety record for these 10 years," Burkhardt said of the decade-old railroad. "Well, I think we've blown it here."

Joe McGonigle, Montreal, Maine & Atlantic's vice president of marketing, said the company believes the brakes were the cause. He said the rail company has been in touch with Canada's Transportation Safety Board.

"Somehow those brakes were released and that's what is going to be investigated," McGonigle said in a telephone interview. "We're pretty comfortable saying it is the brakes. The train was parked, it was tied up. The brakes were secured. Somehow it got loose."
