Other studies have suggested a link between infectious diseases during gestation and a heightened risk of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder. But the new study didn?t find a specific connection between influenza and the behavioral disorders, the researchers report in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

?I think this is the largest and most careful study that?s been done on the topic of fever and influenza in autism development,? says Paul Patterson, a developmental neurobiologist at Caltech, who wasn?t part of this study.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis identified 538 children with an autism spectrum disorder, 162 others with developmental delays and 421 who were developing without any apparent problems. The children?s mothers provided health information on their pregnancies. After accounting for differences in race, child?s age, insurance, smoking, mother?s education and residence at the time of birth, the scientists found that women who had suffered an uncontrolled fever during pregnancy were roughly twice as likely to have an autistic child as mothers with no untreated fevers. Fever in gestation was also associated with a more than doubled risk of developmental delays, report the researchers, who recently also linked autism risk with obesity in pregnancy (SN: 5/19/12, p. 16).

??I think pregnancy is the key for autism,? Patterson says. Several other research groups have also zeroed in on gestation as a critical time, he notes.

Inflammation accompanies fever in the body, and inflammatory proteins called cytokines can pass through the placenta into the fetus during pregnancy, says study coauthor Ousseny Zerbo, an epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, who worked on the study while at UC Davis. This transfer would pose a risk if it alters brain development in the fetus at a crucial time, he says. ?Elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines [in utero] lead to behavioral problems in animals,? he says.

What?s more, Patterson says, the heat of fever can overactivate neurons, inducing them to fire more and damage fetal brain growth, tests in animals show.?

Patterson cautions that while the new study is better than previous work on fever and autism, much of the data are based on the mothers? memories of events that occurred years earlier. ?Recall bias is always an issue in this area,? he says. ?If you have an autistic child, you?re always searching for why that happened.?

The Center for Medicine, Health and Society at Vanderbilt University announces five faculty hires. Included in this group are scholars who study how factors including war, race and politics influence health and health care.

?Our search process at MHS lasted through the year, and we are delighted that it resulted in such a fantastic, vibrant, multidisciplinary group of scholars, teachers and citizens,? said Jonathan Metzl, director of the center and holder of the Frederick B. Rentschler Chair. ?As a group, they will foster MHS?s overarching mission of studying the social, cultural, global and political aspects of health and illness.

?These new hires also provide a vital foundation for the future growth of MHS, as we continue to expand in the coming years.?

The Center for Medicine, Health and Society (MHS), founded in 2006, is a multidisciplinary center that links the social sciences and humanities to Vanderbilt?s academic medical center in undergraduate and graduate education, and cultivates dialogue among research and teaching faculty committed to exploring links among the humanities, social sciences and academic medicine.

Dominique Behague (Brunel University)

Dominique B?hague, associate professor of medicine, health and society, researches psychiatry, reproductive health and the politics of global health research. She leaves a position in anthropology at Brunel University. Her specialty is the ethnography of Brazil and the anthropology of health and biomedicine. Her research has been supported by grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation, World Health Organization, PanAmerican Health Organization and Wellcome Trust.

Derek Griffith (University of Michigan)

Derek Griffith, associate professor of medicine, health and society, works on issues including racial disparities in infant mortality and the health and health behavior of African American men. He leaves the University of Michigan, where he was director of the Center on Men?s Health Disparities and assistant director of the Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture and Health. Funders of his research include the American Cancer Society and W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Ken MacLeish (Princeton University Press)

Ken MacLeish, assistant professor of medicine, health and society, is an anthropologist who studies how war takes shape in the everyday lives of people whose job is to produce it ? soldiers, their families and communities. MacLeish recently earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and a National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral fellowship at Rutgers University. His book Making War: Everyday Life at Ft. Hood will be published by Princeton University Press.

Amy Non, assistant professor of anthropology and medicine, health and society, is a molecular anthropologist interested in the genetic and sociocultural contributors to racial inequalities in health. Her work has specifically addressed the relative contributions of genetic ancestry and sociocultural factors to explain racial disparities in hypertension in Puerto Rico and the United States. She is completing a Robert Wood Johnson HSS fellowship at Harvard University after earning her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Florida in 2010.

Laura Stark (Wesleyan University)

Laura Stark, assistant professor of medicine, health and society, researches medicine, morality and the modern state. She is the author of Behind Closed Doors: IRBs and the Making of Ethical Research as well as several articles and book chapters on the history of ethics and on bureaucracy in everyday practice. Her current book project, The Life of the Clinic, uses archival documents and oral histories to explore the lives of ?normal control? research subjects who enabled and sustained the first clinical trials at the U.S. National Institutes of Health between 1953 and 1983. She comes to Vanderbilt from Wesleyan University.

Screening finds skin cancer, but does it save lives?: MedlinePlus

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors find a high number of malignant tumors when a state-wide skin cancer screening program is introduced, says a new study.

Based on results from a program in Germany, researchers say 116 people need to be screened for skin cancer and five people need to have a biopsy to find one malignant tumor.

They, however, cannot say whether the screenings actually saved lives.

Still, the numbers reported in the new study are "quite good," said Dr. Alexander Katalinic, one of the study's coauthors, in an email to Reuters Health.

In the United States, the last time the government-backed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) looked at the screenings in 2009, the group said there was not enough evidence to recommend full-body exams to check for signs of skin cancer in adults. The USPSTF, however, did not recommend against it either.
Dr. Virginia Moyer, the chair of the USPSTF, said the group reviews its guidelines every few years, and as for now its 2009 recommendation stands.

SOME FALSE POSITIVES

For the study, the researchers examined data from the Skin Cancer Research to Provide Evidence for Effectiveness of Screening in Northern Germany (SCREEN) program, which was conducted in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein between 2003 and 2004. (Germany has had a national skin cancer screening program in place since July 2008.)

More than 360,000 people older than 20 years old and living in the state chose to be screened by doctors who went through a special training to identify suspicious skin lesions or moles.

Some people decided to see a dermatologist while others went to a general practitioner who referred them to a dermatologist if they suspected skin cancer.

Overall, about 16,000 people had a biopsy -- about one for every 23 people who were screened. Doctors identified about 3,100 malignant tumors from those biopsies.

The cost for each screening is about $27. A biopsy can run over $100, and the removal of a malignant skin lesion can cost about $800.

The researchers cannot say how many screenings led to an unnecessary biopsy or treatment, because of the program's design. But, Katalinic said "of course there are false positives."

Overall, there were 3,103 malignant skin tumors, and 585 of those were malignant melanomas, the most deadly type.

More than 50 people between the ages of 20 and 49 years old had to have a biopsy to identify one melanoma. That's more than double the 20 biopsies needed to find one in people over 65 years old.

Katalinic said, as an epidemiologist, he thinks the number needed to screen or biopsied should be improved, especially among younger people. There were also 1961 basal cell carcinomas, 392 squamous cell carcinomas and 165 were other types of malignant tumors.

DID THE SCREENING HELP?

The United States' National Cancer Institute says about two million people in the U.S. are treated for basal cell or squamous cell cancers every year. As for melanomas, the American Cancer Society says more than 76,000 people will be diagnosed with one in 2012 and about 9,000 will die from it.
"The main question is do we find the right skin cancers to prevent deaths and morbidity (or costs)," said Katalinic.
Another study Katalinic coauthored reported that there was a significant drop in deaths from skin cancer following the program.

Deaths from skin cancer fell by about 50 percent -- to one melanoma death or fewer per every 100,000 people each year. The number of deaths from skin cancer in neighboring regions that didn't do screening remained the same over time (see Reuters Health story of May 7, 2012.)

Even that drop, however, could be due to an increased awareness of skin cancer and not the screening itself. The study also didn't look at whether there was a decrease in overall deaths.

"This is terrific information and certainly will be useful," said Moyer of the new study. But, she added, it does not answer the question of whether the screening led to better health outcomes. Also, she said the study could have benefited from a comparison group, who did not get screened.

Moyer said the approach of the SCREEN program may also be a way for the U.S. to solve the problem of there not being enough dermatologists to screen everyone for skin cancer.

Basically, specially trained doctors who are not dermatologists act as gatekeepers and refer patients who have suspicious lesions or moles to dermatologist.

"In terms of feasibility, if it were the case that screening were shown to result in better health outcomes, this would be one possible way to manage that," said Moyer.

Cambodia land activists' convictions called unjust

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? Human rights groups in Cambodia expressed outrage Friday over prison sentences imposed on 13 women who were protesting being evicted from their land without adequate compensation.

The women were sentenced Thursday by a Phnom Penh court after being found guilty of aggravated rebellion and illegal occupation of land in a three-hour trial.

Their trial came amid heightened concern in Cambodia about land grabbing, which is sometimes linked to corruption and the use of deadly force to carry out evictions.

This month, a visiting U.N. human rights envoy warned that the issue was a volatile social problem, and a teenage girl was shot dead by security forces carrying out an eviction.

"Sentencing to jail 13 people who have been victimized by land grabbing is a complete injustice," said Ou Virak, director of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights. "There was no fair trial."

Those sentenced, who included a 72-year-old woman, had been residents of Phnom Penh's Boueng Kak lake area, which the government awarded to a Chinese company for commercial development, including a hotel, office buildings and luxury housing.

They were arrested Tuesday when they tried to rebuild their homes on the land where their old houses were demolished by the developers in 2010.

The group has protested several times in the last few years to demand land titles they said had been promised by Prime Minister Hun Sen's government. They claimed that the city government resettled some families, but did not include them.

Ou Virak said the issue of the rich and powerful grabbing land from the poor ? who then are arrested if they resist or complain ? was becoming more serious.

Pung Chhic Kek, president of the local human rights group Licadho, said the case against the women was groundless and described the legal proceedings as "a show trial and ridiculous."

She said that lawyers from her organization were barred from talking with the defendants and introducing witnesses.

In the animal world, it is not always the strongest that prevails sometimes, it is the most beautiful. A well-known example is the peacock. The peahen chooses the partner with the most attractive tail fan. A research team at Bielefeld University headed by the evolutionary biologist Dr. Holger Schielzeth is now studying how far a comparable mechanism is involved in mate choice among locusts. The male Siberian locust (Gomphocerus sibiricus) has swollen front legs. The scientists are now studying how far female locusts prefer the male with the most powerful swellings and select their mates accordingly. The German Research Foundation is funding the project for five years as part of its Emmy Noether Programme.

Sexual ornaments are what zoologists call such prominent features that influence mate choice. One example is the swollen forelimbs of the Siberian locust (Gomphocerus sibiricus). Holger Schielzeth has called these ornaments 'Popeye arms' because of their resemblance to the cartoon sailor's muscular forearms. 'We suspect that this feature is decisive for the female's mate selection', he says. What's so special about such ornaments is that reproductive success does not depend necessarily on adaptation to the environment. At first, glance, it would seem as if such an ornament is even an end in itself.

Schielzeth and his team are experimenting with the locust in order to find out how important the condition of the Popeye arms is for female mate choice. They are also analysing whether the condition of the Popeye arms is related to an animal's health. Are the forelimbs more swollen when the male is better nourished? However, the opposite perspective is being studied just as closely. Are well-nourished females choosier than those living in deficient environments?

The reason why the scientists are seeking answers to all these questions is that they want to understand the evolution of sexual ornaments. 'Much of the variety that impresses us so much in nature relates to sexual ornaments', says Holger Schielzeth, 'hence, we are finally also interested in gaining a better understanding of the emergence of biodiversity'. Evolution cannot be understood without knowing about the genetics of these features, Schielzeth says.

The research project is entitled 'Genetics of intersexual selection: Conflict and coevolution' and has been running since mid-March. The head of the project, Holger Schielzeth, wrote his doctoral thesis on mate selection in zebra finches at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen and at the LMU Munich. From 2009 to 2011, he worked as a postdoc at Uppsala University in Sweden.

With its Emmy Noether Programme, the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" (German Research Foundation) helps outstanding young researchers to gain the necessary qualifications to take a leading position in science, research, and teaching. Two Fort Worth, Texas, fishermen charged in the killing of a large alligator say they were protecting themselves and never intended to commit any crime. KXAS-TV's Scott Gordon reports.

Two Fort Worth, Texas, fishermen have been charged in the killing of a large alligator, but both say they were protecting themselves and never intended to commit any crime.

Keyon Ivory, 31, and his friend, Patrick Miller, 34, said they panicked when they encountered the gator while fishing earlier this month along the Trinity River near the Fort Worth Nature Center.

"I was in the front seat here, steering," Ivory told NBCDFW.com, pointing to his small bass boat.

Suddenly, he saw the alligator rising from the water. He said it was "a huge one; I mean, bigger than the boat we were on."

The boat is 10 feet long. The alligator was 11.

"I was scared. I was very scared," Miller said. "When it started coming towards us, that's when we really got scared."

The men said they feared for their lives and jumped out of the boat.

"I instantly panicked," Ivory said. "My heart raced a beat, you know. I mean us, everyday guys, we don't see something like that on the water every day."

Miller admitted that he shot the gator. He said he brought the gun with him because it was new and he didn't want someone to steal it from his car.

Ivory then called 911 to report what had just happened.

"We tried doing the right thing," Miller said.

They waited for sheriff's deputies to arrive and said they fully cooperated.

Investigation contradicts attack claim
The men initially claimed in the 911 call that they had been attacked, but the investigation found they did not shoot the gator in self-defense,?Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Mike Cox said.

Ivory got tickets for having an unregistered boat and not having life preservers.

Miller was cited for illegal hunting and fined $5,300.

He said he cannot pay the fine.

"We just don't want to go to jail," Ivory said.

Both men apologized for what they did, even though they thought at the time they were protecting themselves, they said.

"Most of all, we have our remorse for it," Ivory said. "I want to apologize, like I say, over and over again to the Nature Center about it because we're not no poachers. We would never harm anything. We would never shoot an innocent bird."

They both said they have had nightmares since the incident.

Animal experts say most alligators do not pose a threat to people.
