Olympic steeplechase in London awaits CU Buff teammates Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp

CU's Emma Coburn will take her passion to the Olympic level when she runs the steeplechase at the London Games. (Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post)

BOULDER???

Emma Coburn went to her first Colorado football game when she was a week old. She could sing the CU fight song when she was 4, and she wore a little Buffs cheerleader outfit to her older brother's flag football games when she was 5. Her parents attended CU, as did grandparents, aunts, uncles and older siblings.

"I mean," Coburn said, "I was born to be a Buffalo."

Apparently she was born be a special runner for CU's successful track and cross country program as well. Next month she will represent her school and her country on the track at the London Olympics, two months shy of her 22nd birthday. And then, unless she changes her mind about turning professional ? she won the Olympic

trials' steeplechase running world-class times ? she will return to CU for her final year of eligibility.

A Boulder native who grew up in Crested Butte, Coburn has had trouble grasping the notion that she and teammate Shalaya Kipp will be running in the Olympics together in the same event. Kipp, who is from Salt Lake City, finished third at the trials.

"I know we're flying there soon, but I just still feel kind of in a daze," Coburn said after a workout Thursday, six days after she made the team. "Part of me feels like, 'OK, now what?' And part of me is kind of not back to reality yet."

Kipp said the reality of their impending trip to the biggest athletic stage in the world hasn't sunk in for her, either.

"Maybe it will, by the time we're done with it, by the end of the summer," Kipp said. "Right now, mainly just focusing on my training, not trying to get too overwhelmed, going, 'Oh, my gosh, I'm training for the Olympics!' This is what I do every day. Don't want it messing with my head."

Coburn won the NCAA steeplechase title last year but redshirted the indoor and outdoor track seasons this year to focus on making the Olympic team and peaking in London. Kipp won the NCAA title last month, the fifth steeplechase title for a CU woman in seven years.

Steeplechase is one of the most demanding events in track and field, requiring speed, aerobic capacity, strength, balance, coordination and a lot of courage. Runners go over 35 barriers in a 3,000-meter run, including a "water jump." Those barriers are 30 inches high and can be dangerous, especially in traffic.

"It requires everything," CU coach Mark Wetmore said. "It's almost a middle distance event, so the more economical you are over the barriers, the more of a middle distance event it becomes. But I would say here, our method of preparation more emphasizes the 2,970 meters that are between the hurdles than the total of 30 meters of jumping up and down. A lot of steeple coaches spend a lot of time on drills and drills and drills. We do less."

Coburn appears to float over the hurdles, seemingly stepping over them effortlessly rather than leaping. Kipp has to put more effort into getting over them.

"Shalaya has more engine and less aerodynamics," Wetmore said. "I think in terms of Formula One racing ? her aerodynamics aren't perfect, but she's got a 1,000-horsepower engine."

Trading ski poles for steeples

Coburn may have been born to run for CU, but Kipp grew up splitting time between Salt Lake City and the ski town of Park City, dreaming of competing in the Olympics as a ski racer. She was 11 when Park City hosted slalom and giant slalom for the 2002 Olympics.

"As a little kid, I drew the Olympic rings with snowflakes around it," Kipp said. "My Olympic dreams happened in the winter, not in the summer. (Running) kind of ended up being a surprise, but I'm not going to complain either way. Training is training. You learn to work hard from ski racing, and you can apply that to running."

In fact, CU first got Kipp's attention because of its ski team, winners of 18 NCAA championships.

"I remember I was looking at colleges with my mom as a sophomore in high school, I was still ski racing and I actually looked at the ski team here," Kipp said. "I kind of kept Boulder in the back of my mind. I really liked it. As time went on in high school, I started thinking about Colorado as a running school."

In fact it was Kipp's background as a ski racer that made Wetmore think she just might have potential in steeplechase.

"She had been a downhill skier and wasn't afraid of going 50 miles an hour over slippery, scary things," Wetmore said. "We thought, 'Well, jumping off of stuff in crowds when you're tired has some fear involved, she seems to have the courage necessary for (steeplechase).' While the technique of it hasn't come as easily for her as it has for Emma, the crowd and the jumping and stuff was never a problem for her, which is huge."

Kipp saw her ski background as an asset as well.

"When he explained the water to me, I thought, 'Well, if I'm fine going on wooden boards 60 miles per hour, landing on ice, I can go running-speed and land in some water,'" Kipp said. "Turned out it was a lot of fun. I found some similarities, and I really enjoyed it."

Coburn's family moved from Boulder to Crested Butte when she was in the third grade. She and her three siblings attented a small K-12 public school called the Crested Butte Community School. Before focusing on running, Coburn played volleyball and basketball.

"We had a little deal with all the kids that, if they kept high grades and did three sports a year, there were perks involved in that," said her father, Bill Coburn. "The third sport of the year, besides volleyball and basketball, is track. They all did track. She just kind of followed along."

In basketball and volleyball, Coburn developed athletic skills that would serve her well in the steeple.

"She was super coordinated and super athletic," Bill Coburn said. "She averaged 16 rebounds a game and had the most spikes. Just being able to coordinate your body and know where your body is in space, being able to jump, you put that kind of quality with distance running and it's a great event for her, the steeplechase."

Fueling each other's fire

Despite competing against each other in the same event, Coburn and Kipp are good friends. Their affection and respect for each other is obvious.

"Emma and I work together really well because we kind of have a yin-yang aspect to our relationship," Kipp said. "We both have our strengths, and we both can respect the other one's strengths. We'll go on 15-mile long runs together, and some days she'll be pulling me up all those hills, some days I'll have to pull her up those hills."

Coburn is the better steepler, at least for now, but Kipp typically beats Coburn in cross country running.

"I think we just know that we'd rather be working hard together than have a little more glory on our own," Coburn said. "In workouts we're neck-and-neck for everything and we're not competing against each other, we're just deciding to run together and we both love it. I'd just rather have her by my side than a stranger by my side in London."

Coburn could make good money now as a professional, but American record holder Jenny Simpson finished her CU career after racing steeplechase in the Olympics, and Coburn wants to do the same.

"It's a discussion I have had several times," Coburn said of turning pro, "but I'm very happy being at the University of Colorado. My coaches and I made the decision to sacrifice my indoor and outdoor seasons and redshirt so I could focus on (London), so I feel like I owe it to my school, my coaches, my Colorado community and my teammate Shalaya to finish out my eligibility there and represent the school again on the track in 2013. I'd like to stay at Colorado."

What is steeplechase?

At the elite level, steeplechase is a 3,000-meter run with four ordinary barriers on the track and a fifth barrier with a "water jump," so the race requires runners to clear barriers 35 times in a race. For women, the barriers are set at 30 inches. For men, they are set at 36 inches.

Steeplechase has been an Olympic event for men since the inception of the modern Olympics in 1896. The first women's Olympic steeplechase was held at Beijing in 2008, where Jenny (Barringer) Simpson finished ninth while still a student at CU and was the top American. She also is the American-record holder (9 minutes, 12.5 seconds) but no longer runs the steeplechase. She made the London Olympic team in the 1,500 meters.John Meyer, The Denver Post

Argentina?s YPF and Bridas, 50% owned by CNOOC, to invest $1.5B in Vaca Muerta shale oil development in Argentina

Argentina state-owned energy company YPF and Bridas, an Argentina-based oil and gas company 50% owned by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, agreed to invest $1.5 billion over the next 24 months to begin development in the massive shale oil deposits in the Vaca Muerta (?Dead Cow?) formation in the province of Neuqu?n?one of the largest shale oil formations in the world.

Vaca Muerta is present in an area of 30,000 km2 (7.4 million acres); of this area, YPF participates in 12,000 km22 (3.0 million acres, or 40% of the total. The estimated size of recoverable shale oil in the formation has increased to about which has increased to 741 million barrels, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The area of the deal encompasses 663 square kilometers; the $1.5 billion investment includes the acquisition by Bridas of 35% of Down Area A?elo and 24.5% of Bandurria. The development plan calls for 130 wells to be drilled over the next two years.

While most of the development is targeting unconventional oil will, a portion will be for wet gas exploitation.

As part of the agreement, Bridas is also seeking $500 million in additional long-term funding.

As with an agreement signed earlier in December between YPF and Chevron, the deal is a ?farm-in?, which brings YPF title over the area, while both companies share exploration and development costs, as well as know-how and technology.

Foursquare Privacy Policy Change - Business Insider

Foursquare has notified its users that privacy policy changes will swing into effect next month, making more user data more public.

Foursquare checkins used to show a user's first name and last initial, but beginning January 28, 2013, checkins will publicly display a user's full name.

Additionally, venue owners wanting to take a closer look at checkins will have access to "more of those recent check-ins, instead of just three hours worth." There's no specification on how far back they'll be able to look.

Showing people's full names is bound to stir up some grumbling among the user base, but FourSquare points out that there's an easy fix if you don't like it ? you can change your name in your account settings.

Sony stops shipping PlayStation 2 in Japan

Featured

Tomb Raider

The holiday shopping season is officially over?and that means the spasm of big game launches is over as well,?right? Well, no. In some ways,... Read more

25 min.

It looks like?"game over" for the PlayStation 2.

After selling more than 153.6 million units over 12 years, Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan has announced that it is discontinuing the console, with no new shipments slated for retailers. (This is only for Japan at the moment, though it's likely the European and American markets will follow suit.)

With PlayStation 3 development in full swing, and several new games on the way for 2013 (including "Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time" and "The Last of Us" from Naughty Dog Studios), the decision makes sense. But the PlayStation 2 had a long shelf life and introducing a number of game franchises and sequels that have enthralled millions of casual and hardcore players alike.

The PlayStation 2 debuted in 2000 and spent several years competing against Microsoft's Xbox system, Sega's Dreamcast console and Nintendo's GameCube. The system launched in the U.S. with 29 games, including landmark titles like the snowboarding game "SSX" and the arcade driving game "Ridge Racer V." Eventually it would see even bigger and better games through both long-awaited sequels and original titles. [See also: Atari Legacy Still Going Strong At 40 Years]

Naughty Dog, moving beyond the "Crash Bandicoot" series it had established on the PS One system, created "Jak and Daxter," a gorgeous platforming adventure series featuring an unlikely duo ? an adventurous hero and his wisecracking animal partner. Not to be outdone, Sucker Punch Productions introduced its own cartoon-like action series under the name "Sly Cooper," focusing on a likable raccoon thief and his "crew" (consisting of a genius turtle and a bumbling hippo getaway driver).

The PlayStation 2 was also the place to find several big-name sequels. Polyphony Digital's "Gran Turismo" racing series became more life-like than ever before, with exquisite visuals and realistic gameplay that made you feel like you were really behind the wheel. (It would become the go-to simulation for car drivers all over the world, working in collaboration with Logitech's state-of-the-art Driving Force GT Wheel.)

Square Enix expanded its "Final Fantasy" franchise in a number of ways, as well as its Disney crossover role-playing series "Kingdom Hearts." And Rockstar Games managed to make its "Grand Theft Auto" games better than ever before, between such best-selling hits as "Grand Theft Auto III," the 80's based "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" and the urban-based "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," all of which sold well into the millions.?

When the PlayStation 3 came out in 2006, Sony shifted its focus to that new hardware, but kept the PlayStation 2 on the market, lowering it to a $100 price with various pack-ins. (Depending on where you bought it???you could get "Lego Batman" and "Toy Story 3"included). It continued to sell well throughout the years, and some developers continued to make games for it, like EA Sports with its "Madden" franchise. But by the time 2012 rolled around, no new games were slated for it, and the writing was on the wall.

The PlayStation 2 will never be forgotten as far as gaming is concerned???not to mention the fact that most of its popular games are coming to the PlayStation 3, either as part of an HD re-release ("Ratchet and Clank Collection," "Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection") or a digital download on PlayStation Network ("Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" just came out last week for $14.99).

Enloop Will Write Your Business Plan For You

The Launchpad is a series that introduces Mashable readers to compelling startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: Enloop

One-Liner Pitch: Enloop helps entrepreneurs figure out whether their idea would really make for a good business.

Why It's Taking Off: The online service makes it easier for small and medium-sized companies to write business plans and vet their ideas.

Coming up with a good idea is just the first test for aspiring entrepreneurs; the next big test is figuring out whether that idea is actually a viable business. That's where Enloop comes in.

Enloop, an online service that launched in 2011, helps small and medium-sized companies craft and vet their business plans. The website prompts users to enter in basic information about their business ranging from product details to payroll information, and uses a set of common underwriting metrics to vet and predict the financial the performance of the company.

The goal, according to founder and CEO Cynthia McCahon, is to improve the success rate for small and medium-sized businesses. "So many entrepreneurs just assume success. They can't imagine their idea is anything other than good," McCahon told Mashable. "Enloop lets you set that aside and look at the data, the facts, so you can make a more informed decision to decide whether to go forward."

McCahon, a former business consultant, worked with several underwriters and financial institutions to pick out a set of key metrics for predicting a business's potential for financial success, which the average entrepreneur might not think about. All in all, Enloop uses 16 different financial metrics -- including ratios for expense-to-sales and debt-to-work as well as percent profit before taxes -- to evaluate business plans and give companies an overall performance score for their strategy.

Business owners can then compare this score to the average performance of businesses in their industry to see how their financials stack up. "You should be in the ballpark or at least have a reason for not being," McCahon said.

The service doesn't just vet one's business plan, however, it also helps business owners write it. Enloop recently added an auto-write feature that generates text for each section of a business plan based on the data the user has offered. As McCahon notes, it won't exactly be creative writing, but the tool will fill in your business plan with the kind of language that financial underwriters expect to see.

In addition to the auto-write feature, Enloop also recently added a text-sync option lets business owners insert live data from their financial reports into the text of the business plan so that the overall forecast stays up to date over time.

Enloop is bootstrapped at the moment, but its own business plan is to rely on a freemium model. Enloop lets each user create one business plan for free with a financial forecast that extends out three years, along with the predictive score and some additional analysis. Those business owners looking for more than that can sign up for one of three premium plans ranging from $9.95 to $39.95 a month, which provide more detailed financial forecasts.

(AP) ? Russia and the U.N called Thursday for the resuscitation of a peace initiative for Syria that never got off the ground when it was proposed months ago because both parties to the conflict rejected it.

The plan, unveiled by world powers at an international conference in Geneva in June, called for an open-ended cease-fire, a transitional government to run the country until elections, and the drafting of a new constitution. The plan was a non-starter for the opposition because it did not explicitly ban authoritarian President Bashar Assad and other members of his regime from taking part in the transitional leadership.

The regime ignored it because it would entail voluntarily giving up power.

There was no sign that the plan had any more chance of succeeding now than it did back in June. Assad's government did not comment on the attempt to revive the proposal, and a coordinator for the rebels seeking to end Assad's rule called the plan "illogical."

"No one in the opposition can accept this, and if they accept it, it will be refused by the Syrian people," said Bassam Al-Dada, a Turkey-based coordinator with the rebel Free Syrian Army. He said Assad's forces have killed too many people for him to play a role in any solution.

Anti-regime activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the revolt against Assad began in March 2011.

Because of Russian objections, the original plan did not call specifically for Assad's ouster nor ban him or top members of his regime from participating in the new government.

Much has changed in Syria since the plan was first presented. Rebels have gained momentum, seizing more territory and a number of military installations in the country's north. They are also expanding their control in suburbs of the capital, Damascus.

These gains make it increasingly unlikely that they will accept any plan that allows any part of Assad's regime to remain.

The government, too, has given no indication it will give any ground and dismisses almost all opposition activities as terrorism that seeks to destroy the country.

In Damascus on Thursday, the U.N. envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi called the Geneva plan "suitable enough" to end Syria's war.

"The Syrian people seek genuine change," Brahimi said, adding that the transitional period "must not lead to the collapse of the state or the state's institutions."

Brahimi said that original plan could be amended, but he didn't say how.

He did not mention Assad by name and only said the transitional government would have "full executive powers," meaning "all the authority of the state should be possessed by that government."

Brahimi said it remained to be determined what kind of government would follow and whether the elections called for under the plan would be for president or parliament.

In Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevic said Russia, too, is trying to revive the Geneva plan.

"We continue to believe that there is no alternative to that document in trying to find a settlement in Syria," Lukashevich said.

He also reaffirmed Moscow's objection to calls for Assad's ouster.

Russia has been Assad's strongest backer throughout the conflict, selling arms to his forces and, along with China, protecting him from censure by the U.N. Security Council for his violent crackdown on the opposition.

Top Russian officials have recently signaled a new resignation to the idea that Assad could fall. Still, they have said they will not call for his ouster or offer him refuge should he decide to flee.

Brahimi is expected to visit Russia this weekend. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met Thursday with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to pave the way for Brahimi's visit.

Mekdad is expected to hold talks with other top Russian diplomats later.

Violence flared in Syria again on Thursday, with rebels attacking a police academy and military airport in the northern province of Aleppo while clashing with government forces near the Wadi Deif military base in northern Idlib province.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 rebels and 16 government soldiers were killed in clashes around Idlib province.

A car bomb blew up in the Damascus suburb of Sbeineh, killing four people and wounding ten, the state news agency reported.
